“Sunken Treasures”
The life and history of Elba Island’s sea floor

Elba is appreciated and loved for the extraordinary beauty of its landscapes, the intense green that reflects in the blue sea, the many beaches, the prominent granite formations that rise to the defense of the coast…

This island though, queen of the Tyrrhenian, hides other natural treasures that every year attract more than 120,000 enthusiasts. The crystalline waters of its sea conceal an immaculate sea floor inhabited by an “explosion of colors and life” that rivals any tropical tourist destination. To safely appreciate these marvels, it is necessary to possess a diving license that is worth the trouble to obtain and will repay you in new emotions. From your very first dive, you will be enveloped in a blanket of blue and, after a brief descent, you will discover a world that goes beyond your wildest imagination. Wonder and admiration take over as you “touch with your eyes” rocks covered with colorful animal organisms and algae, sponges that range in colors from yellow, orange, red to violet and blue; invertebrate animals that look like flowers clinging to the reef, waving to the rhythm of the currents, branches of red coral that stand out even from the deepest of crevices, showing you their little white tentacles and offering you a visual impact and a chromatic combination that only nature can produce. It is quite possible that your attention will be drawn to the enchanting marine choreography of the sea floor only to be diverted by the slow “strolls” or the sudden passing of elegant eagle rays that soar through the water, followed by schools of inoffensive barracuda oblivious to their presence, rosy common dentex hunting for little fish and cephalopods, and large groupers. If you observe the rocks closely it is easy to discover the lair of an octopus who is “wary and attentive” of your movements and not far off a moray eel slithering through the reef. It is difficult to describe with words the emotions and sensations you feel exploring the secrets of the sea, where wrecks nestled on its floor tell many a tale of ancient Roman ships that transported urns, steamships loaded with merchandise, battleships used in times of war.

To dive into the depths of the Island means to discover marvelous panoramas and submerged worlds whose crystalline waters always offer exceptional visibility. So, we invite you to go diving, supported by the expert staff of the numerous diving centers located along our coast. That is the only way you will experience and enjoy all that this splendid “rock” has to offer. If you go to Rome, you cannot miss seeing the Colosseum, or the Cathedral in Milan, the Uffizi in Florence. It’s the same here on Elba, where you will only know a part of its richness if you do not explore the living magic of its sea floors.
